2004 Honda Civic

Want to know why the Japanese carmakers do so well in our market? Consider this: Honda Civic has been the best-selling car in Canada for a couple of years now.

For at least a few snapshot moments in time during the 2003 model year, it has also been the best-selling vehicle, car or truck, in Canada, surpassing the previously unchallenged Chrysler Caravan.

And that's with no discounted fleet sales to speak of.

So, what's the mandate for Civic for 2004? "To re-invigorate the Civic brand within Canada," says Arch Wilcox, national sales manager for Honda Canada.

Most brands should need such re-invigoration.

That said, Civic sales are down from 2002, as is the entire compact segment. Almost all of the decline has been on the two-door coupe sub-slice - yes, another sad commentary on the appeal of SUVs, although the success of real cars (station wagons, actually) like Mazda Protege5, Toyota Matrix and Pontiac Vibe indicate that buyers simply want more space and usefulness in their small cars, along with a hint of style these models manage to convey.

Civic doesn't play in that mini-wagon game (although there's more than a passing resemblance to Civic under the CR-V's skin) so it is focusing on the sedan.

There have been dozens of mid-life changes to Civic since its last "FMC" ("full model change" in Honda-speak) in 2001, primarily to improve ride quality and feature content.

For 2004, the "MMC" ("major model change," i.e., mid-life upgrade) sees a host of appearance modifications, with new details in the grille and lower front and rear fascias, plus new wheel covers on most models.

Honda says this makes the car more "sporty, aggressive, dynamic, substantial and sleek". I say that like a mother with her twins, only someone intimate with Civics could tell the difference from more than three paces.

The biggest news for 2004 is the addition of the Civic Si sedan, which replaces the LX-Sport.

The Si essentially stuffs the 127-horsepower V-TEC engine, formerly offered only in coupe body style, into the four-door.

This combination - four-door sedan; 127-horse engine - was formerly reserved for the up-scale, Canada-exclusive Acura EL version of this car. I can only imagine the bloodletting on the desk of the president of Honda Canada as the Honda and Acura sides of his business fought over this.

Whatever. The Honda guys won, saying they needed something more than the 115-horse engine in lesser Civics to remain competitive in this segment.

"Remain competitive?" Remember, they're Number 1 overall here.

The more powerful engine delivers at the higher end of the rev spectrum. But the 114 lb.-ft torque peak at 4800 rpm (versus 110 at 4500) suggests you'll be rowing pretty hard with the shift lever to get the most out if it.

It also gets a bit loud up there, despite the sweet mechanical smoothness.

The Transport Canada fuel economy numbers are identical for both engines, at 7.5 litres and 5.9 litres per 100 km city/highway for the base five-speed manual transmission, and 8.1/5.8 for the optional four-speed automatic. Power without guilt, and yes, it does appear that the automatic is more fuel-efficient on the highway than the manual, a partial explanation for which may be the autobox's taller final drive ratio.

Otherwise, the Civic remains what it has always been: a very pleasant place to be. Everything works with a slick precision, fit and finish are more than class-competitive.

The flat floor introduced in this generation provides more space, especially in the rear, although three abreast back there still isn't going to be a Toronto-to-Vancouver option.

The handling is nimble, the ride firm but compliant. The Si, like the one-level-down LX, gains ABS with Electronic Brake Force Distribution for the front-disc/rear-drum brakes.

Over the already well-equipped LX, the Si also has a power glass sunroof, power heated side-view mirrors, carbon-fibre-style centre console trim and leather-covered steering wheel and shift knob (with the five-speed manual).

At $21,500, this represents a lot of car for the money.

But knowing the Honda people, they're probably going to lose sleep wondering whether Canadians will be the least bit interested.
