Back in the 1980s, I had a string of used Chevrolet Impalas. They were high-milers and I didn't pay much for them, but I always liked them: roomy, powerful and nice to drive.

Back in the 1980s, I had a string of used Chevrolet Impalas. They were high-milers and I didn't pay much for them, but I always liked them: roomy, powerful and nice to drive.

The model's been redesigned for 2006, and my admiration is back. The new Impala is equally smooth-running, spacious, well-priced and well made, and represents a high point for a GM family car.

This is possibly the best sedan Chevrolet has ever made.

There are three new engines available, including a 5.3-litre V8 that goes into the Impala SS.

But my LT tester's 3.5-litre V6 proved to be an excellent choice; I don't see the need to move up to the 3.9-litre V6.

The 3.5 is strong, quiet and serves up plenty of passing power; you can get into a decent performer as low as the $24,685 base LS.

The 3.9-litre-equipped LTZ does add several extras, including traction control, ABS and a tire pressure monitor, but starts at $29,840.

The LS includes air, power windows, locks and mirrors, cruise control, CD player, eight-way power driver seat, OnStar navigation and road assistance, and curtain airbags.

My LT tester added dual-zone climate control, MP3 capability, leather-wrapped wheel and compass, along with an unnecessary remote starter.

The ABS/traction control package is an additional $950.

A revised chassis and suspension provides enough firmness for confident control around sharp turns, but it's supple enough that it handles road imperfections for a smooth ride that never feels floaty.

The seats are comfortable and I had no trouble finding a good position behind the wheel.

The dash is uncluttered, with sufficient small-storage space and out-of-the-way cupholders.

The flip-and-fold rear seats - a $325 option on the 3.5 models - lift to reveal much-touted underseat storage bins that are really more like indentations, but they're great for stashing emergency winter gear (you do carry some, right?).

The 130 cm long trunk is huge, and with the seats flipped, there's 195 cm of flat storage space.

The styling has been revised for 2006 as well, but it still doesn't set the world on fire; it's a shame the flares over the front wheels weren't copied on the rear ones, to give the slab siding some definition.

And its silhouette is still imprinted on motorists' minds: a couple of drivers slammed their brakes beside me, until they realized I wasn't a cop.

On the highway, the Impala's good road manners and supportive seats make longer road trips quite pleasant.

Alas, I'll never see another Impala like the '81 I bought for $100 and drove for years.

But the 2006 model, especially in the lower trim lines, is one heck of a deal.
