You have to feel a little bit for the folks at Volkswagen. After all, the Audi division has almost always offered the more desirable high-end of the corporation's offerings, leaving VW with comparably more pedestrian mainstream products.

Since VW is planning to break into the large luxury sedan market in 2004 with the Phaeton, it set out to begin altering that perception ahead of time by offering an eight-cylinder engine in its current flagship, the Passat sedan and wagon.

There wasn't room in the Passat's nose for a V8, so VW decided to take its successful "narrow angle" VR6 engine design to a new level, joining what amounts to two 15-degree V4 engines at a 72-degree angle in a single block to produce a W8.

This automotive oddity not only takes up less space than a comparable V8, but it allows VW to show off its engineering prowess at the same time. (The Phaeton will use a 6.0 litre W12 of the same layout.).

The Passat's 4.0 litre W8 produces a healthy 270 hp at 6000 rpm and 273 lbft of torque at 2750 rpm. You'd expect this amount of power to hurl you into the back seat on hard launches but, despite the best efforts of an overly sensitive throttle, 1,506 kg of leather-lined, all-wheel-drive wagon just won't be hurried off the line.

Not that the Passat is slow; it's more that it feels slow. Wind noise is well controlled, and the W8 is subdued until heavily prodded, when it offers a throaty small block, Chevy-style exhaust note. The W8's surge is best experienced at highway speeds, where overtaking manoeuvres are quickly

followed by an exclamation as you look down at the tiny speedometer markings and realize just how fast you are actually going.

That speedo reads to 300 km/h in W8 Passats (versus 260 in lesser models). Pointless, since the car is said to be governed to 209 km/h, a claim that I never tried to verify. It's actually hard to read your speed at a glance, since 0 to 100 km/h takes up just the first third of the dial, making for tiny increments. This doesn't improve at night, despite VW's signature blue and red backlighting illuminating almost every

control in the cockpit.

What a cockpit, though. VW (and Audi) are the undisputed kings of interior finish, and the Passat is no exception. Real wood and chrome abound, and the fit and finish are nearly above reproach. The leather seats (heated in front) would have been more cozy for me with less of a curve in the lumbar area, but proved very comfortable otherwise.

The one glaring fault is the accelerator pedal's location, deeper in the footwell than the brake, and immediately next to the carpet lined transmission tunnel. In my admittedly pigeon-toed driving position, I found my foot momentarily trapped between the brake pedal and tunnel on several occasions. Pigeon-toed or not, it's a deliberate up and over from the gas to the brake. An Audi A4 that I drove earlier did not share this pedal layout, so this must be a Passat quirk.

The wagon's cargo area is quite large, aided by the upright sides and near vertical tailgate (take that, curvaceous Audi Avants!). In true wagon fashion, the rear seat splits and folds to further enlarge storage as needed. Whatever doesn't fit inside can go on the stainlesssteel roof rack. Just watch out for that roof mounted antenna when you take your surfboard off at the beach.

Once you get past the apparent lack of feedback from the steering, you'll find a capable handler. Despite a fair bit of body lean, the Passat will happily hang on up to limits higher than most owners will ever ask.

Most sport utility vehicles lack the virtual front and rear limited slip differential effect that VW's Electronic Differential Lock function provides. A lower centre of gravity than those SUVs provides better directional control, too, but physics still rule. The stability control system is good, but if you get in way over your head (or an errant SUV hits you), a barrage of front, side and side curtain airbags will work with the Passat's stout structure to do their best to save you from harm.

For $54,000, you'd expect to find more visual differences from the less expensive 2.8 V6 and 1.8T models, but badging, quad exhaust outlets and discreetly different xenon headlights are about it. Therein lies the rub. The W8 Passat's biggest competition comes from within. The W8's excellent 4-MOTION all-wheel-drive system is available on the V6 Passat GLX, which offsets its power deficit with the benefits of less weight and less cost some $10,000 less.

Even the wheels, though unique to the W8, are the same 16-inch diameter that the V6 Passat GLX receives, unless you've moved up to 17-inchers by ponying up for the W8's Sport package. And that's before dragging Audi's attractive sedans and wagons (sorry, "Avants") into the fracas.

It's true that you won't find another eight-cylinder competitor for the same price, but in reality the Passat W8 remains a beautifully engineered car in search of a marketplace.
